| About pool-mates.com |
So, why are we doing pool-mates.com and what is it about ?
The whole thing began from what I would actually want, and can't find right now on the Web. This is a place that I can find people with the same interest as me based on my location. I would particulartly want this in order to meet up with people that really care about the game and play a few frames. In a few clubs, including my home club, there are people that go there every day and therefore you can just show up and challenge them. But these pool clubs are not everywhere, and I run into this problem when I moved to the UK where I haven't still found clubs like that. I'm sure that there are other people here that have the same problem as I've seen posts in forums from people asking others to meet up for practice racks. But this is not the solution to the problem in my opinion.
And this is what pool-mates.com is all about !!
It's a social networking website but is more than that. It's a platform for pool/snooker/billiard players find people to play with. It is also a place for every one of us to keep a pool profile and exchange opinions, organise events, publish news and basically know each other. All of this in a local and world wide scale.
Talking about the scale, this is intended to be translated in as many languages as possible so people from different regions of the world can use it. The views of the website are intended to be localized. So for instance a pool player from China is not particularly interested in people organizing an event in Cambridge UK and the other way around. So it will be basically a set of local communities and a common world wide one.
This is pool-mates.com in a few words. I will regularly update this blog and let you know how the development is progressing and give you samples and ask for your opinions as I go along. Keep in mind that this is an early stage of the project and I'm really interested hearing things from you, and what you would like from this website or in general. The project is flexible and can be shifted towards the direction that we all agree that is best.
I'm looking forward to any positive or negative feedback.
Please leave a comment if you are interested in this website. Also don't hesitate to contact me if you are interested getting involved in the project in any way you believe that you can contribute.
Thanks for reading
Luke Farley on 11-01-2010 2010 23:46 Hi there,
I am interested in joining your website but was wondering if it would be possible to organise matches between people? I mean, I know a few people at my local club but would be interested in meeting some new players. Is there some way for meet to search for local players?
Luke
Alex on 12-01-2010 2010 00:46 Hi Luke,
Thanks for bringing this up as this is apparently not clear from the description above.
The answer is yes, and actually this is the whole point of pool-mates. It is to find people around your area, as well as events. So we are basically trying to organise the pool community a bit more.
The project is still on development but we believe that it's going to be something like this :
All users will provide a valid address. Via the profile page you will be able to indicate what days you are free to play and the club of your preference. We will use this data to find other people that want to play (and in the future at the same level as you). Then you will be able to see your matches and talk to the people to make any arrangements necessary.
Now about the events : You will be able to create events and send alerts to your target areas (that might be a city, area within a city, a whole country or even worldwide!!). People that are interested will receive the request to the event and sign up. This is a great way for event organisers as well as pool players as there will be no need to look to forums and individual sites for small to big events.
We will soon announce via this blog a feature list of what the website is going to be in detail.
So stay tuned.
